Dream Chaser Miss Savannah Taylor
October 12, 2015

My story pretty much begins when I learned to sew at the age of 6.  I began by hand sewing and making barbie doll clothes out of socks and making myself tops and dresses out of pillow cases and such.  I will never forget the day I stayed home from school playing rookie in the first grade so that I could make myself this specific top out of an old pillow case.  My mom would get so mad at me for messing up all of my socks haha I got my first sewing box and materials on my 8th birthday and I continued to advance just by hand then when I was 10 I got my first sewing machine and embroidery machine.  I taught myself how to operate the machines and how to cut my material.  I never used patterns because I hate them, I would come up with a design in my head and cut from memory.

I had my first sewing class when I was a junior in high school and  it reminded me of a talent and feeling I used to know. It felt like I was doing exacly what I loved to do and had just forgotten. Then pulled out my old Disney sewing machine (which I still use today) and began refreshing myself on everything I had pushed out of memory. I grew up watching my mom sew outfits for my sister and I but as far as actually knowing to skills and “the right way” to do and cut things I was clueless. I made my first dress in 7 years completely by hand to refresh my memory and that's where it all started. I would never wear the clothes I made to school or even let anyone know that I even knew how to sew because as crazy as it sounds I thought it would make me seem boring or less interesting and I didn’t want anyone to think I couldn’t afford to buy my own clothes. I am also very critical when it comes to my own work and always have been I am super shy when it comes to my designs because I know it will bring criticism.

I finally got some confidence after wearing one of my first dresses in my senior pictures and getting so many compliments on it I then realized that I may actually be on to something.  I was able to create a piece that was new and different that people wanted so I then began my Instagram page “SeaminglySavannah’s” and started making custom pieces for girls.  I would get people’s measurements and design accordingly.  Every piece I have ever made is very unique because they are all different.  Like I mentioned earlier I hate using patterns and if I do I make them myself.  I paid my rent for my whole first year of college at JSU just by making and selling my clothes but I slowly pulled away from postings on my instgram and putting myself out there.  It got very stressful for me going to school and getting people’s measurements and having to fix things for such a small price I was selling myself short. I have continued to sew and design custom orders for people I just haven’t marketed my business much.

I traveled to Honduras in July by myself just to make 17 dresses for the poor little girls in a village church.  Seeing how much they need there and how blessed we are truly made me want continue internationally.  I have such a passion for what I do and knowing that my gift can bless others in need is just so amazing to me. I am currently at the University of Alabama majoring in Apparel Design and learning more about the industry.  I work at AzWell boutique, I mend the garments there that have holes, damaged hems or broken zippers, etc. I also do alterations for customers if we are out of their size or need something taken in or hemmed I take them home fix them and bring them back the next day.  I have come a long way in my journey with designing and sewing but I am still learning and growing in my field of study and couldn’t be happier being where I am today! I hope to be in New York or California in the future working for a designer like Alexander Wang and eventually having my own clothing line.

Savannah Taylor is such an inspiration to all young people ! She is self taught and followed her dream of making her hobby, her lifetime career . In this day and time there are so many detrimental issues that are said of young people . But she is quite different,  she spent most of her summer planning on going to Honduras.  She went and was such a hit for the little girls . Savannah measured them and  designed dresses for these 17 underprivileged little ladies ! They are so precious and it shows on their faces and in the video I saw of them modeling !  I am for one that would like to tell Savannah, that girl you are a "Superstar " ! Thanks for showing us your generous and caring ways ! If only more people were like you and through like you the world would be and better place . Again THANKS SAVANNAH ! Good luck in your future in your chosen field of Design ! And I know "Simply Savannah " will be a big name design ! Love you my friend !
